Trent Vale Landscape Partnership Scheme

TVLP receives Heritage Lottery Fund Support

I am pleased to report that The Trent Vale Landscape Partnership (TVLP) has been successful in its application to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a £1.76 million grant towards its total scheme costs of £2.6 million.

Emma Sale, HLF Regional Manager for the East Midlands, said:

“Trent Vale is an important part of the UK’s landscape heritage. The emphasis of this project is on people, enabling them to get actively involved in the heritage of their local environment as well as learning about crafts, skills and traditions. We believe that this is much the best way of ensuring that this special area is protected for the future.”

Trent Vale was one of only two schemes nationally to be earmarked  Landscape Partnerships funding at this round, the other is Scapa Flow in the Orkneys. It is also the first scheme in the East Midlands to receive fudning.

Robin Evans, Chief Executive of British Waterways (who are the lead partner on the scheme), commented:

“We are delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund is supporting the Trent Vale scheme which fundamentally aims to encourage and enable access to the ‘hidden’ River Trent. Much of the river is central to the communities through which it flows, but from the point at which it becomes tidal at Cromwell just north of Newark the river environment has become more isolated and less well understood and the potential of the area has not been explored. With a diverse range of projects aimed at reconnecting the local communities with their landscape we hope that people will find, and once again recognise, the uniqueness of Trent Vale.”

The 3 year scheme aims to make significant change through the linking of a series of small projects throughout the Trent Vale area (communities along the river from Newark to Gainsborough). The potential projects are diverse and include:

  • habitat improvements with farmers,
  • traditional skills training,
  • archaeological investigations,
  • art and interpretation,
  • oral history/village history,
  • improvements to access to the river,
  • heritage days and festivals,
  • education visits and workshops,
  • production of guides for visitors,
  • raising the profile of Trent Vale, locally, regionally and nationally.

The aim is that all the projects will work together to reinforce and strengthen the identity of Trent Vale and contribute to the production of a community focused long-term Sustainable Development Strategy for the area.

The Next Steps

We will now enter a 12 month process of detailed planning. Our first step will to be recruit a new Project Manager who will lead on producing the business plan for the scheme, develop the projects in detail, work through design and planning consent issues and recruit volunteers.

There will be further updates so keep checking this site.

TRENT VALE LANDSCAPE PARTNERSHIP

The River Trent in the Trent Vale is now often hidden from view and difficult to visit, therefore Trentside communities have become disconnected from this natural feature which has influenced where and how they live.

The Trent Vale Landscape Partnership aims to increase awareness about the river, its surrounding lands and its heritage, and to improve access for people to the river. This will be achieved by the development of a number of programmes and projects through the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Trent Vale Landscape Partnership area follows the course of the River Trent from Newark in the South to East/West Stockwith (north of Gainsborough) and covers 388 square kilometres (click here to see a diagram of the area). The area boundary encompasses 55 parishes, that are adjacent the river, with a combined population of 68,000.
